Please Note
The following adventure took place in the Hamilton and Stoney Creek area on August 9, 2019. This post has been revamped and revised to look awesome.
Also, despite being a super organized individual, I managed to lose a few images from the original post. I managed to find a few through social media, but the rest are unfortunately lost. 🙁
Steel City’s Tasty Adventure Time
For those of you who don’t know me personally, I am a proud German. I would do anything to get my hands on some European goodies. Once you’ve had a taste, you’ll always want more.
The Previous Day
My food journey actually began the previous night. I have a super awesome friend who works at a gas station, and I visit her on the regular. One day, I noticed they had their own coffee shop there, so I was dying to try it. Word of advice: ABORT MISSION! This shit was absolutely terrible. It was so nasty that it made sewer water look like Starbucks. I’m sure there are gas stations out there that will have a decent selection, but this one was just pure garbage.
Venturing Off to Hamilton and Stoney Creek
My mom is German, and so is my dad. We’re all German. Our favourite spot to grab a taste of home is located in the wonderful city of Hamilton, aka Steel City to sound cooler. Instead of wasting gas and energy, we usually make a day trip out of it, so it’s worth the drive down there.
I know what you’re thinking. Just hearing the name “Hamilton” conjures up some pretty intense images for any fellow Ontarian. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, most of us think it’s a dingy city filled with questionable nonsense. Despite the bad reputation it has, there are some serious gems located there. Food wise, that is. I’ve had incredible dishes of falafel and chicken shawarma there.
Anyways, my dad had an appointment, so that was the first stop. At his appointment, he claimed that his health card picture “doesn’t do him justice.” He also didn’t put an age on his application because “they should clearly see that he’s 39.” This man is so charming, and anyone who’s had the pleasure of meeting him knows just how awesome he is.
Also, at his appointment, I found this ancient artifact, which brings me back to my childhood. I’m old. 🙁 For anyone who doesn’t know what this is, it’s a CD player.
Let’s Scope Out the Area
While he was at his appointment, my mom and I decided to kill some time and check out the area. Our first item on the agenda was a European import store. They sold mainly Croatian and Slovenian items. When we first entered, our noses were greeted by the most amazing scents of baked goods, meat, and cheese.
Everything looked absolutely incredible, and if I lived close by, I’d definitely be a regular shopper. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a webpage, but it’s KolMix Foods Inc. It is located in the plaza on 168 Barton Street in Stoney Creek, Ontario if you’re interested in checking it out.
Our second order of business was a shop selling Indian and Middle Eastern products. They had shelves of sauces, snacks, beauty products, etc. I always find it interesting to see what other cultures have to offer. This store was called Swadesh Supermarket, and I did find a webpage for it, which you can check out here.
At this point, we still had some time to kill until my dad was finished. We spotted a Tim Horton’s and, like any Canadian in the wild, I’m glad we found one because I desperately needed to replenish my caffeine levels.
After drowning myself in coffee, a bathroom break was in order! ABORT MISSION, AGAIN! I’ve seen cleaner bathrooms in horror movies after stuff literally goes down. Also, I’m going to go bathe in hand sanitizer.
Alright, I’m Getting Pretty Hungry Now…
As soon as I saw my dad, I ran to his SUV. Food was calling my name. At this point, it was already pushing 1:30, which is WAY past my usual lunch time. The 3 of us made our way to downtown King Street. Off in the distance, the Black Forest Inn was peeking at its eager customers. German music and the smell of schnitzel filled the air. Then again, I was starving at this point, so the “German music” was probably just my stomach.
Hamilton: Where German Dreams Are Created
I ordered the Käsespätzle. Spätzle is a type of pasta that’s made with fresh eggs. You have to try this! Also cheese is your friend. I visited Dresden, Germany last year so I was able to compare it to the real deal. Dresden definitely takes the cake. Over there, the spätzle danced in perfect harmony with the caramelized onions. The Canadians over here still do a pretty good job though.
Get In My Belly
Our final stop on our expedition was Denninger’s. This precious piece of paradise is located at 284 King St. E. in Hamilton, Ontario. It literally has everything your little European heart desires. They also serve food and drinks there if you’d like to dine in. Our eyes grew bigger and bigger as we glanced at the selection of imported chocolate, meat, cheeses, desserts, and sauces. We successfully spent over $100 in pure happiness. I highly recommend that everyone go here at least once in their lifetime. You won’t regret it.
Heading Home from a long day in Hamilton
Unfortunately, on the way home, we got stuck in traffic. I was disgusted by the number of cars that are preventing me from eating cake right now. How dare they?
