Please Note: My adventure in Martinique took place at the beginning of February 2019. This post has been revamped and revised to look awesome. For more escapades, check out our “Lifestyle” section.
Day 10: Fort de France, Martinique
My lovely, well-deserved vacation is slowly reaching its end. Fort de France, Martinique was the 7th stop on our journey. In comparison to the other islands, Martinique is definitely one of a kind. It’s as if Europe and the Caribbean had a child.
I also recommend visiting a currency exchange because they use Euros. Also, a big round of applause for them for driving on the proper side.
Driving Through the Breathtaking Scenery
As per usual, we booked an island bus tour. Our guide, Patricia, and our driver, Jean-Philippe, took us to the most panoramic places. This is a must-see tour for anyone who wants Instagram-worthy photos.
Our first stop was at a church, and let me tell you, I am so incredibly thankful that I went pee here.
What I didn’t know, is that the next 1-2 hours would be spent driving through topsy-turvy roads straight out of my worst nightmare. It was like a Stephen King and Dr. Seuss collaboration road project. This roller coaster ride was the most insanely nauseating experience. I’m sure you can imagine how ecstatic I was when we finally reached our next stop.
I’m not one to get car sick, but I definitely wanted to eat my body weight in Gravol that day. This drive is not for the weak of heart! But the views make it totally worth it.
The Famous Mount Pelée in Martinique
With Mount Pelée standing tall in the background, we trotted through the ruins of a theatre that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. I was so focused on getting off the bus that I actually lost our tour group during this part. Thankfully, I found them, or else I wouldn’t be sitting here writing right now. I mean, who else could take on the position of entertaining the world with my knowledge, humor, and charm?
Luckily, the drive back was much smoother and less stomach-churning. We made a few more scenic stops, and before we knew it, our beloved Celebrity Summit was back in sight.
Winding Down from Another Adventure
Our night commenced with a local brew and some delicious biscuit crostillant. The beer had a really unique flavour to it. It’s really hard for me to describe, as I’m not a connoisseur… yet. I guess you’ll have to book a trip here and try it for yourself!
My dad also keeps pushing for me to buy a place here, which is super weird. I’m sure he just wants a free vacation home. A taste of Europe with a shorter plane ride. But anyway, I may be back!
On a final note, be prepared and bring Euros! A lot of the souvenir shops by the ship accepted the US dollar, but all the shops in the city only accepted the Euro. Always do your research before you travel anywhere!
Bonjour!
