Please Note: My adventure in St. Vincent took place at the beginning of February 2019. This post has been revamped and revised to look awesome. For more escapades, check out our “Lifestyle” section.
Day Nine: Kingstown, St. Vincent
We arrived at the port of Kingstown, St. Vincent, bright and early in the morning. A pirate ship was docked to our right, and the crowing of roosters could be heard off into the distance. Again, for those eager travelers, please note that camouflage clothing is not allowed to be worn.
Yaarrr! Scenic St. Vincent: A Pirate’s Paradise
If you’re a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean, this island is a must-see.
Our day started off with a nice, scenic drive around the island. Shazelle, our guide, was one of the most energetic and enthusiastic people I’ve ever met in my life. She’s definitely 100% suited for this kind of work; she was awesome! Our driver, Enrico, was just filling in for someone that day. He didn’t know the route well and he was unfamiliar with the bus. Kudos to him for putting up with the super hectic day. Luckily for him, our tour was cut short.
A Pretty “Bomb” Experience
Our first stops were a church and a botanical garden. As we stepped off the bus to head to our last stop, I noticed policemen wrapping caution tape all over the street. Is it Halloween already? Nope, I wish.
It was a bomb threat! Our group was quickly escorted back onto the bus, and then we drove backwards through the crowds of people. We were waving back and forth with the locals as if this was a normal, natural occurrence. True story, I’m not making this up.
What an intense experience! It was definitely one of a kind. At this point, my stomach was rumbling yet again. We headed back to the ship to fill our stomachs and satisfy our appetites. My dad and I were then off again to explore the streets.
Navigating the Crazy Streets of St. Vincent
Imagine a super intense game of Frogger, complete with palm trees and frustration. The streets of Kingstown were probably inspired by this nonsense. There were so many ditches, and the sidewalks were extremely narrow. You really had to watch where you were going or else you might just meet your demise. And not in a fun way like in the Sims.
The locals crossed the streets whenever they damn well pleased. Cars were honking every 5 seconds for absolutely no reason. It’s almost as if they were attempting to make some type of electronic music without any real equipment. Between that and the constant rooster crowing, our walk definitely consisted of some noisy madness.
King Foodie’s Chocolate Hunt
The best part about our excursion was my dad’s mission to find chocolate.
There was a grocery store as soon as we exited the pier. I worked in retail at the time, so I’m pretty familiar with how they lay out most stores. Do you really think my dad would listen to me then? Of course not.
He bypassed at least 3-4 employees wearing uniforms, and instead, he decides, “Hey, let’s ask the security guard!” (#dadlogic) Anyway, he asks him where the chocolates are, and the guard walks us over to the checkout where there’s Mars and Snickers. “No, no!” my dad replies. “We have that stuff at home. I’m looking for the real stuff!”
I wish everyone could’ve seen how insanely confused this poor guy looked. My dad repeated the “real stuff” about 3 times until I decided to interject and explain to him that my dad wanted locally made chocolate.
Long story short, he ended up getting his chocolate. The excitement must’ve overwhelmed him because he ended up trying to go through the entrance while about 2 employees tried to stop him and told him he was going the wrong way. I’m sure both of us were the “breakroom gossip” of the day there.
Day Nine: Check!
My dad was absolutely not missing his beloved 4pm dessert, so we basically ran back to the ship.. marathon style.
Today’s day was another success! Despite the tour being cut short, I now have a super unique story to tell. I should get back there someday, though. I have to know what was in that museum. The suspense is killing me!
