Please Note: My adventure in San Juan, Puerto Rico took place at the end of January 2019. This post has been revamped and revised to look awesome. For more escapades, check out our “Lifestyle” section.
Day Two: San Juan, Puerto Rico
This morning, I woke up to the refreshing sounds of Puerto Rican construction. I’m pretty sure they must have taken notes from Canada because, up here, we do that up here year round. A -30°C snowstorm doesn’t stop anyone or anything.
Also, fun fact, but when I checked out their website for flashback memories, it even said on there that there is construction next door. They’re STILL doing construction.
First stop, breakfast! I ended up ordering the French toast. The waiter asked me if I wanted fruit on top, so naturally, I replied, “yes.” So here I am, thinking I’m getting something relatively healthy and sparing myself the sugar rush. NOPE! Out comes Mount Diabetes, complete with swimming pools of chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and enough powdered sugar to make a cocaine addict’s eyes widen. I then started to prepare my casket since I’d be in a sugar coma for a while.
The Hunt for the Missing Suitcase
We couldn’t start our adventure until we retrieved my dad’s long-lost suitcase. The best part about this part of the journey was our taxi driver. He had the genius idea that it was perfectly acceptable to drive the wrong way down a one-way street. Casually, not caring whatsoever. I love this guy!
I’m not going to bore you with some average story, so to sum it up, we did manage to get his luggage back.
And the Hunger Begins Again
By this point, it was already lunchtime. Since I need about 6 meals a day (plus snacks), you’re damn right, I’m hunting something down! After a little searching, I literally found my dream spot, Bajuice! Not only did this place have vegetarian and vegan options, but it also had an extensive list of smoothies.
I ordered “The Boss” smoothie. This combination was absolutely delicious! You could barely even taste the “greenery,” which is totally pro smoothie making in my books.
Since we were still a bit “flight hungover” from the previous day, we decided to just stroll around the lovely city of San Juan.
A Little San Juan Adventure
After a much needed exercise session throughout the local sidewalks, my stomach was growling yet again. My dad, King Foodie, managed to spot Ben & Jerry’s, the ice cream shop. He must own a snack GPS because I honestly have no idea how he spotted the place. It was so hidden that it even makes “Where’s Waldo” look like a cakewalk.
Naturally, we darted for it because we all scream for ice cream! Also, there was no one there to lecture us. My flavour of choice was the “Sweet Cream with Cookies”. My dad ordered the most epic banana split I’ve ever seen. This bad boy came with 3 colossal scoops of ice cream, complete with unlimited toppings.
We then stared off into the never-ending clear, blue water while a Bedouin Soundclash cover played in the background. At this point, there’s no place I’d rather be.
Feed Me! Feed Me!
Soon enough, my beloved dinner time was upon us again. After an intense (not really) research session on cuisine, I was prepared to eat some local food. The border guard at the airport had recommended we try “Mofongo,” so it was our mission to find it.
Much to our luck, it wasn’t too hard to find a place. There was a guy handing out menus in front of a restaurant that had Puerto Rican cuisine. Once we saw MOFONGO in bold-ish letters, we knew we hit the spot. (That’s what she said.)
This beautiful locality goes by the name of “Cafe del Angel”. The dish was really interesting! It tasted similar to something that I’ve had before, but I was definitely proud of myself for trying something new and unfamiliar.
Not only does the food in Puerto Rico taste out of this world, but you can see the chefs are passionate about it. They strive to merge presentation and flavour, and it really is a harmonic combination.
The majority of the restaurants did have vegetarian options, and I did see a few that even had vegan options. A lot of them post menus right outside the door, which is very helpful with the selection process.
Day Two was Great!
It was awesome to try some local cuisine and we’re all super stoked that my dad got his luggage back. Now we are just focusing on boarding this cruise ship.
